Pokémon 151 Blooming Waters Collection

The 151 Phenomenon: How 151 Became the Modern Base Set

For many of us who grew up with the original Pokémon Trading Card Game, the hobby eventually started to feel distant. The Pokédex grew past 1,000 creatures, mechanics became more complex, and the simple charm of the early days felt harder to find. Binders went into storage, and many longtime fans quietly stepped away.

Then came Scarlet & Violet 151.

Released in September 2023, this set didn’t try to reinvent the wheel. Instead, it did something smarter: it went back to the beginning. It focused exclusively on the original 151 Pokémon and delivered them with modern quality and care. For a lot of older fans, it felt like the perfect entry point back into the game.

A Return to Familiar Ground

What made 151 work so well was its focus. There were no new Pokémon to learn. Every card featured a classic Kanto Pokémon, numbered exactly as they appear in the Pokédex – Bulbasaur as 001 all the way to Mew as 151. Opening a pack felt like revisiting an old checklist from childhood, but with sharper artwork and better card finishes.

The Special Illustration Rares stood out in particular. Cards like Charizard ex, Blastoise ex, and Venusaur ex received beautiful full-art treatments that felt like upgraded versions of the Pokémon we loved as kids. Even the basic Energy cards brought back the familiar holographic texture from the original Wizards of the Coast Base Set. These small touches made the set feel respectful rather than exploitative of nostalgia.

The Bridge Between Old and New

151 did more than just look backward. It quietly served as an excellent introduction to the current Scarlet & Violet era. Many returning collectors started by chasing the classic Pokémon they knew, then stayed because the modern gameplay felt fresh and engaging. The rules had evolved, but the core experience of building decks and battling with familiar faces was still very much intact.

Parents who had not played in decades found themselves teaching their kids how to play using the same Pokémon they grew up with. Local game stores saw a noticeable return of older fans. The set successfully reconnected two generations of players without forcing either side to compromise.

Why It Matters

A true Base Set is more than just the first release. It is the one that defines the standard and brings people together. The original 1999 Base Set launched the entire TCG. Scarlet & Violet 151 reminded everyone why they fell in love with it in the first place.

Nearly three years later, the set still holds strong value and respect within the community. It proved that the original 151 Pokémon remain the heart of the franchise, capable of thriving with modern card design and gameplay.

For longtime fans, 151 was not just another expansion. It was the set that made Pokémon feel like home again.

Welcome back, Trainer.
