The Mega Evolution era kicked off with Ascended Heroes on January 30 and kept rolling with Perfect Order on March 27, and it’s showing absolutely zero signs of slowing down. Two more sets are locked in before we even get to the big anniversary drop in the fall, and honestly? The second half of 2026 is stacked. Let’s break it all down.

Mega Evolution: Chaos Rising

Prerelease: May 9 – 17, 2026 | Wide Release: May 22, 2026

Mega Evolution Chaos Rising Booster Box

The next set is practically already here and it’s bringing chaos (literally). Mega Evolution: Chaos Rising drops on May 22, 2026, and it’s packing some serious heat with Mega Greninja ex, Mega Pyroar ex, Mega Floette ex, and Mega Dragalge ex all making their entrances. If you want to get your hands on packs early, prereleases run May 9 through 17.

The story behind the set has Mega Floette ex causing absolute mayhem in Lumiose City, with Trainers scrambling to fight back. The set brings five Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, five regular Pokémon ex, 11 Illustration Rares, 18 Ultra Rares, and six Special Illustration Rares.

Mega Evolution Chaos Rising ETB

In total you’re looking at over 120 cards, including 20+ Trainer cards and 35+ cards with special illustrations. That’s a solid chunk of cards to chase.

On the reprint side of things, don’t expect a nostalgia dump here Chaos Rising is focused squarely on new cards. Early pack opening data from over 1,800 packs puts the Mega Greninja ex SIR at around 1 in 78–92 packs, which is slightly tighter than Ascended Heroes, and booster boxes are already trading at a hefty premium on the secondary market. So if you’re planning to buy sealed, sooner is probably smarter.

Mega Evolution: Pitch Black

Prerelease: July 14 – 12, 2026 | Wide Release: July 17, 2026

Pokemon Mega Evolution Pitch Black

Oh, you thought the summer was going to be quiet? Nope. Pitch Black hits shelves on Friday, July 17th, with prereleases running July 4th through July 12th. Happy Independence Day, go find some Darkrai cards.

The set is the English adaptation of Japan’s Abyss Eye expansion, which stars Mega Darkrai ex and releases in Japan on May 22nd, the very same day Chaos Rising launches over here. The name “Pitch Black” isn’t just edgy for the sake of it, either: Darkrai is literally known in Pokémon lore as the “Pitch-Black Pokémon,” so it fits like a glove.

Beyond the big boss card, the set also introduces Dark Bell, a Trainer card that confuses both Active Pokémon unless they’re Dark-type, plus a new Malamar that evolves from Inkay. Chaos-inducing Trainer cards and a spooky squid Pokémon? Very on-brand.

One heads-up for collectors though: don’t expect a massive set. Since there’s no additional Japanese source material to pull from, Pitch Black will essentially be a near 1:1 copy of the Japanese Abyss Eye set, just like Phantasmal Flames, Perfect Order, and Chaos Rising before it. That means a smaller set overall, a pattern that’s emerged since Japan stopped printing subsets.

Japanese 30th Anniversary Set

Release: September 2026

Pokemon 30th Anniversary Set

Alright, here it is. The big one. The reason half the Pokémon TCG community has been vibrating since February. The 30th Celebration set is coming, and it’s doing things no Pokémon TCG set has ever done before.

The Japanese release is locked in for Wednesday, September 16th, with the English version expected on or around Friday, September 18th. And in what is genuinely a historic moment for the TCG, this will be the first time ever that a Pokémon TCG set launches simultaneously around the world. No more waiting months while Japan gets all the fun, everyone gets it at the same time.

New Format and Rarity: This isn’t just a regular set with a fancy anniversary stamp slapped on it. The entire pack format is getting an upgrade. Instead of the usual five cards per pack, you’re getting six — and every single card will be holofoil. Every. Single. One. Open a pack, get six shiny cards. That’s just how it works now, apparently, and we are not complaining.

A brand-new rarity exclusive to this set is also being introduced, with Pikachu, Mewtwo, and Mew as the first cards revealed in the new tier. Both Mew and Mewtwo have an opalescent, almost holographic sheen in early previews and honestly, they look incredible.

Three decades of Pokémon TCG, and 2026 might just be the best year yet. From Mega Darkrai wreaking havoc in competitive play to a landmark anniversary celebration with all-foil packs and global simultaneous launches, there’s genuinely never been a better time to be a Pokémon card fan.
